My grandfather sang Cherokee songs to us to calm us down like he did his mules. His mother was the sister of the great-grandfather of the President born William Jefferson Blythe III, whom you know as Clinton.
In 1926 my mother was born left-handed, the mirror of her right-handed twin sister. My mother lost a year of school with typhoid. Her teacher hit her for being left-handed. My grandfather brought his horsewhip to the discussion with the teacher. I was raised to be more diplomatic.
My father, an orphan, was born left-handed, so, the day of the last bayonet charge in the Korean War, February 7th, 1951, I was born left-handed. My father died in 1954. So, I am a Boomer like your father. I was raised by my "Dad" the "Jack Mormon" George Martin McNabb who "wouldn't say spit if he had a mouthful, " and said "Wish in one hand and spit in the other. See which one gets full first.
I learned in the US Navy they normally did not say "spit."
I am the first Republican in my family of 15 generations of citizens since arriving in Virginia as bond slaves. All my people were Democrats who would say an ancestor was "Cherokee" rather than African. I saw the tintype of my great grandmother standing next to my great-great grandfather. She was "Cherokee." My DNA shows no Native ancestry.
You may not understand my generation when we say of a corrupt dictator, "should be beat every day.... with a horsewhip dipped in saltwater," to the leader of his political party, it is hyperbole, unlike my grandfather's generation.
I am a Vietnam Vet who never forgave President Johnson for getting us into a war we did not fight to win for a despot we should never have supported.
In future, I will be more diplomatic in reference to former Vice President Biden.
